How New York triplets were born in different decades

Kaylie DeShane went into labor on December 28, 2019, when she was 22 weeks pregnant with triplets.

Shortly after Kaylie’s waters broke, older triplet Cian was born. However, doctors made the unusual decision to delay the birth of the other two triplets so that they could get a little stronger.

Rowan and Declan were born a whole five days later, on January 2, 2020. The five-day wait makes Kaylie the world record holder for the longest interval between the birth of triplets. The previous record was two days.

Kaylie and her husband Brandon, from New York, were warned that the odds of the triplets surviving were low. Thankfully, they’re all now happy and healthy at 18 months old.

“After trying to fall pregnant for four years, we decided to try IVF”, said Kaylie. “We decided to place two embryos rather than just one because we thought we would have a better chance of having a baby.”

She added: “We were told that there was a 10% chance of it ending up being twins and a 1% chance of it being a triplet pregnancy. We really never expected that we would actually end up having triplets!”

Twins occur naturally in around one in 250 pregnancies, while triplets are much rarer, occurring in around one in 10,000 pregnancies.

Infertility treatment can increase the chances of having a multiple pregnancy, as can other factors, such as a woman’s age.
