FAQs

About our Twins DNA Test

From just $109, our Twins DNA test can tell you whether multiple children from the same birth (including twins, triplets, quadruplets etc.) are genetically identical or not, with results in just 3 business days.

A twin DNA test – also known as a zygosity test – can be useful for many reasons:

  • If you’re curious about the unique bond your children share
  • If it wasn’t clear during pregnancy whether children were identical or not
  • If you’re a twin, triplet, quadruplet etc. who has always wanted to know if you and your siblings are identical or not
  • Where one sibling has been affected by an illness, and you need to know whether to test the other sibling for the same condition
  • Where you need the information to participate in a study about multiple births

Our Twins DNA test is also a great gift for multiple birth parents, allowing them to find out more about the unique connection their children share.

Identical, non-identical or semi-identical?

Our analysis will determine whether the tested siblings are genetically identical, non-identical or potentially semi-identical.

Identical siblings are known as monozygotic. This means that they were formed from a single fertilized egg that went on to split into separate embryos. Identical siblings share the same DNA profile.

Fraternal or non-identical siblings are known as dizygotic (twins), trizygotic (triplets) etc., and are the result of separate fertilized eggs. This means that they share DNA in common, as is the case with siblings from different births, but they do not have identical DNA profiles.

Semi-identical siblings are an extremely rare phenomenon. They occur when a single egg is fertilized by more than one sperm and the egg then splits to form two or more embryos. The embryos will have an identical contribution of maternal DNA, but different contributions of paternal DNA. Any non-identical siblings could potentially be semi-identical, including boy-girl twin pairs.

How is a twin DNA test performed?

An AlphaBiolabs Twin DNA Test (zygosity test) is performed using the very latest technology and techniques in DNA analysis, to determine whether siblings from multiple births are identical, non-identical or potentially semi-identical.

The test requires a cheek (buccal) swab to be rubbed quickly and painlessly on the inside of each sibling’s cheek to collect cheek cell DNA. This simple, non-invasive method of sample collection can be done at home.

Once the DNA samples arrive at our accredited laboratory, expert geneticists compare the samples, analyzing up to 45 DNA markers (loci) to identify matching DNA markers.

If the siblings are identical, they will share the same DNA profile. If they are non-identical (dizygotic or fraternal twins) or semi-identical, they will have different DNA profiles, but they will still share DNA in common, like siblings from different births.

What is the difference between identical and non-identical twins?

The fundamental difference between identical and fraternal (non-identical) twins is how they are formed in the womb.

Unlike identical twins, that are formed from a single fertilized egg which goes on to split into two separate embryos, non-identical (or fraternal) twins are the result of two separate eggs, fertilized by two separate sperms.

As such, these siblings are no more alike on a genetic level than siblings from different births. Additionally, non-identical twins can be both male, both female, or one male and one female.

Non-identical twins may also grow at different rates, while identical twins usually follow the same pattern of growth.

What is the difference between the standard and the enhanced test?

Our standard twin test is already industry-leading, as it analyzes 25 DNA markers (the industry standard only analyzes 16-21 markers).

What makes AlphaBiolabs unique is that we can also analyze up to 45 DNA markers. This allows more genetic material to be analyzed, which strengthens the result and provides additional reassurance.

This is ideal for customers who want the most powerful DNA test available.

What is included in the kit?

For $109, including your test kit and all lab fees, our Twins DNA Test kit includes:

  • Complete, easy-to-follow instructions on how to take the test and return your samples to our laboratory
  • A pre-addressed envelope to send your samples back to us
  • Two DNA sample collection swab packages, containing one swab in each package
  • Individual DNA test sample envelopes for two siblings

If you need to test more siblings, you can easily select this option while placing your order.

Once we have received your samples at our laboratory, we will email your password-protected results in 3 business days.

How do I collect the DNA samples?

Once you have received your kit, simply follow the instructions included to collect your samples.

Rub the swab gently and painlessly on the inside of the cheek. Two swabs are provided.

You can request more swabs in your kit for additional siblings when placing your order.

Is a parent's sample required?

No, we can perform twin DNA testing (zygosity testing) without a parent's sample.

If twins are determined to be potentially semi-identical, samples from one or both biological parents may be required to confirm this.

Can the test be performed on triplets?

Yes, our Twin DNA Test can be performed on triplets.

Our expert geneticists will analyze and compare the DNA profiles of all three siblings to determine if they are all identical, all non-identical, or if two of them are identical and one is non-identical.

The cost of the test includes laboratory testing for two siblings. However, you have the option to test up to five siblings from the same birth. Simply choose how many siblings you’d like to test at checkout, and extra cheek swabs will be added to your test kit.

When will I receive my kit?

Simply buy your test online now, and we’ll mail it out to you immediately.

You can choose to receive your kit by USPS First Class Mail (included in the cost of your test), or upgrade to USPS Priority Mail (+$9.99) or USPS Priority Mail Express (+$24.99).

When will I receive my results?

Once you have collected your samples, simply mail them back to our laboratory using your preferred shipping method.

As soon as we receive your DNA samples, we begin the testing process at our accredited laboratory.

You will receive your results by password-protected email in 3 business days after we have received your samples.

How accurate is the test?

Our Twins DNA Test is 100% accurate and reliable based on the samples we receive at our laboratory.

We are also ISO 17025, ILAC and BBB-accredited. So, you can be confident of receiving the highest possible standard of service.

Can physical features alone help you tell whether twins are identical?

No, you cannot rely on physical features alone to tell whether twins are identical or not.

While they might start life with nearly identical genetic blueprints, a variety of factors can lead to differences in appearance, health, and personality over time.

This means that a twin DNA test is the only way to know for sure whether twins are genetically identical or not.

At AlphaBiolabs, we have seen many instances where twins or parents of twins thought they were non-identical, only to find out that they were in fact genetically identical upon taking a DNA test.

Can kits be sent to two addresses?

Yes, we can mail your Twin DNA Test kits to two different addresses.

You will find the option to list a 2nd address when you check out.

Can I take a twin DNA test during pregnancy?

A twin DNA test cannot be performed during pregnancy, but it can be performed once the babies are born.

The test is suitable for anyone of any age, including newborn babies and grown-up children/adults. All that’s required is a simple cheek swab DNA sample from each sibling taking part in the test.

Collecting the samples is quick, easy and pain free – simply rub the swab on the inside of the cheek to collect cheek cells and return them to our accredited laboratory for analysis.

Can a twin DNA test be given as a gift?

Yes, a twin DNA test can make a unique gift, and is ideal for multiple birth parents or their children.

Once the test is completed, a zygosity certificate is issued confirming the results, which some parents like to have as a special keepsake or even to use as wall art.

What is peace of mind testing?
