About our Nail Clipping DNA Test
For $195 plus the cost of your chosen DNA relationship test, our Nail Clipping DNA Test offers a discreet, alternative method for DNA sample collection.
The usual method of sample collection for an AlphaBiolabs DNA test is to rub a mouth swab on the inside of the donor’s cheek to collect cheek (buccal) cells. The DNA is then extracted from the cells when the swabs are returned to our laboratory for testing.
A Nail Clipping DNA Test is more suited towards children and younger donors because they don’t need to be made aware that a test is being undertaken. All you need to do is simply send in their collected nail clippings.
Such a discreet method may be particularly beneficial in the case of a paternity dispute, for example, where using a mouth swab on older children could lead to awkward questions.
As well as its use in childhood, another advantage of nail DNA testing is to gain a DNA profile from an individual who has passed away.
This is because DNA cannot be collected from cheek cells using a mouth swab in deceased individuals. However, DNA can be collected from the deceased's nail clippings (as long as next of kin provide consent). A DNA profile from nail clippings could also be made into a lasting memento of a loved one.
Order your Nail Clipping DNA Test online today for just $195 (plus the cost of your chosen DNA relationship test).
Your test kit will be sent directly to your chosen address in discreet, plain packaging, for complete confidentiality.
How is DNA extracted from nail clippings?
Extensive trials by our in-house scientists have proven nails to be a good source of DNA.
Nail clippings are easy to self-collect without needing assistance by professional sample collectors. The collected nails are considered a stable sample so can be stored long-term at room temperature and can be transported to the laboratory for processing by standard mail.
Nail clipping samples can be used for peace of mind DNA testing but it is important to gain consent for all samples that are to be analyzed.
Simply send us your nail clippings, and if we can get a DNA profile, we can perform a DNA test in the usual way (extra fee applies).
The results of the viability study can be made available in up to 5 working days. The results of the DNA relationship test will then take a further 3–5 working days.
Submitting your samples
Both fingernail and toenail clippings can be used for nail DNA testing, but the advantage of using toenails over fingernails is that there is less potential for contamination.
As many nail clippings as possible are required as this provides more sample material to be analyzed.Acrylic nails, Shellac, gel and other forms of nail polish must be completely removed as this could affect the DNA results.
When the nail clippings arrive at our laboratory, the first step is to extract DNA from them. If a profile can be retrieved, the nail DNA will be analyzed for up to 42 DNA markers.
If a DNA profile cannot be retrieved from the nails, we will contact you and arrange to return the cost of your chosen DNA relationship test.
A refund will not be possible for the laboratory work already undertaken for the nail DNA viability study.
How much does a Nail Clipping DNA Test cost?
The cost of the viability study (to extract DNA from the nail clippings) is $195.
If a viable DNA profile can be retrieved, there will be an additional cost for your chosen DNA relationship test.

Is consent needed for nail DNA testing?
Yes, consent is needed for nail DNA testing.
For a child under the age of 16, a parent or guardian must provide consent.
If an individual has passed away, consent must be given by next of kin or a qualifying relative who can consent to the nail clippings being tested.
What is peace of mind testing?
At AlphaBiolabs, we offer peace of mind testing with all our DNA testing kits.
As the name suggests, a peace of mind DNA test is for personal use only.
The results of these tests can give you the answers you need, but they cannot be used for legal purposes or in court proceedings.
Peace of mind tests also allow you to collect your samples quickly and easily at home, without the need to use a more costly and time-consuming third-party to verify the DNA sample collection.
A guaranteed result or your money back
If a DNA profile cannot be retrieved from the nails, we will contact you and arrange to return the cost of the DNA relationship test. However, a refund will not be possible for the laboratory work already undertaken for the nail DNA viability study.
