A toothbrush DNA test is a type of viability study, which involves extracting a DNA profile from a toothbrush for the purpose of performing a DNA relationship test.

A DNA relationship test is usually performed by collecting cheek swab samples from two or more sample donors and comparing each person’s DNA profile to verify a biological relationship.

However, with a toothbrush DNA test, our geneticists will attempt to extract a DNA profile from a used toothbrush instead of a cheek swab sample.

If a DNA profile can be retrieved from the toothbrush, a DNA relationship test can then be performed by analyzing and comparing the DNA profile from the toothbrush with the DNA profiles of the other test participants obtained via cheek swabs.

If a DNA profile cannot be retrieved from the toothbrush, we will contact you to refund the cost of your DNA relationship test.

Please note a refund will not be possible for the laboratory work already undertaken while performing the viability study on the toothbrush.

Our in-house DNA experts have undertaken viability studies to prove that used toothbrushes can be a good source of DNA.

The method of brushing and type of toothpaste used has no effect on the results. Simply send us your used toothbrush and if we can get a DNA profile from it, we can perform a DNA relationship test of your choice (fee applies).

As soon as the toothbrush arrives at our laboratory, our DNA analysts work to extract a DNA profile. We use one of the newest DNA extraction techniques available to ensure a high level of precision. If our scientists can retrieve a profile, we can perform a DNA relationship test in the usual way (fees apply).

Toothbrushes

We can accept regular or electric toothbrushes. If you are sending an electric toothbrush, please just send the toothbrush head. Do not send the whole toothbrush.

Please send a toothbrush that has been used regularly for AT LEAST ONE WEEK. The more that a toothbrush has been used, the more likely it is to provide a DNA profile. A toothbrush that has only be used once or twice is unlikely to provide a usable DNA profile.

You can send your used, dry toothbrush to our laboratory using the sample envelope provided in your test kit.

DO NOT clean the toothbrush before it is sent.

Put the dry toothbrush or toothbrush head directly into the sample envelope – DO NOT put it in a plastic bag or any other packaging. If the toothbrush has been stored in a plastic bag before sending it to us, this will reduce the likelihood of obtaining a usable DNA profile.

Cheek swabs

Your test kit will contain everything you need to collect cheek swab samples for your subsequent DNA relationship test.

Please note, the DNA relationship test can only be performed if a viable DNA profile can be retrieved from the toothbrush.

The toothbrush can be any age, as long as it has been used regularly for at least one week. What matters most is recent, consistent use – this helps ensure enough DNA is present for testing.

For example, if the toothbrush has not been used for more than six months, it is much less likely to provide a usable DNA profile.
