Frequently Asked Questions

Why is our prenatal baby gender test the best available?

For just $179 including your test kit and all lab fees, our Prenatal Gender Test is the most accurate and advanced test available. It allows you to find out the gender of a baby before they are born, with no risk to the mother or unborn child, and with results in just 7 business days.

Only a blood sample is needed, which is usually drawn from the mother’s arm.

Although ultrasound scans are commonly used to determine the gender of an unborn baby, these scans are not always correct. This is because if the ultrasound technician cannot get a clear view of the baby’s genitals, it may not be possible to confirm whether the baby is a boy or a girl.

PCR-based and at-home tests are also unreliable. This is because they CANNOT determine whether there is sufficient DNA from the baby in the sample to produce an accurate result. A PCR-based method only looks for the presence or absence of the Y chromosome. This means that, if there is insufficient fetal DNA within the sample, a baby may be determined to be female when, in reality, there is simply too little male DNA to be detected by the test. Alternatively, there might be male DNA contamination, which could mean that the baby is incorrectly determined to be male.

The AlphaBiolabs Baby Gender Test is the most advanced available, as it uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Most importantly, this allows us to determine if there is enough of the baby’s DNA within the mother’s blood sample to accurately determine the gender. If we determine that there is sufficient DNA from the baby for testing to produce an accurate result, we then go on to analyze the mother’s blood sample for the Y chromosome. If a Y chromosome is present, this is indicative of a male child. If a Y chromosome is not present, this is indicative of a female child. The mother must be at least 8 weeks pregnant to ensure that any Y chromosome present is at a detectable level.

Feel confident to use the results of the most advanced and accurate gender test available to help plan for your baby’s arrival.

What will the test cost?

You can order our Prenatal Gender Test online now for $179.

The price of your test includes:

  • Your test kit
  • Mailing of the test kit using USPS First Class Mail
  • All lab fees
  • A digital copy of your test results (sent by password-protected email)

The mother will need to have a blood sample drawn by a medical professional, such as a nurse, a phlebotomist, or another medical practitioner.

You can organize your own sample collection, or you can choose a sample collection organized by AlphaBiolabs.

If you arrange your own sample collection, you will also be responsible for returning the sample to us.

How soon can the sample be collected?

Non-invasive prenatal gender testing can be carried out as early as 8 weeks into the pregnancy, and simply requires a sample of the mother's blood.

The blood sample is time sensitive and needs to be collected by a nurse, a phlebotomist or another medical professional and returned to AlphaBiolabs as quickly as possible.

You can organize your own sample collection, or you can choose a sample collection organized by AlphaBiolabs.

If you arrange your own sample collection, you will also be responsible for returning the sample to us.

The mother must be at least 8 weeks’ pregnant to ensure that any Y chromosome present is at a detectable level. If the blood sample has insufficient DNA then another blood sample will need to be collected. If the testing is still unsuccessful after this time, results will not be possible. This is considered an inconclusive result.

How does our prenatal gender test work?

Our Baby Gender Test is the most advanced and accurate available, as it uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).

PCR-based and at-home tests are much less reliable.

What is the difference between the Next Generation Sequencing method used by AlphaBiolabs and the more traditional PCR method?

The AlphaBiolabs prenatal gender test is the most advanced available, as it uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Most importantly, this allows us to determine if there is enough of the baby’s DNA within the sample to accurately determine the gender. If we determine that there is sufficient DNA from the baby for testing to produce an accurate result, we then go on to analyse the sample for the Y chromosome. If a Y chromosome is present, this is indicative of a male child. If a Y chromosome is not present, this is indicative of a female child.

The more common PCR-based and at-home method CANNOT determine whether there is sufficient DNA from the baby to produce an accurate result. A PCR-based method only looks for the presence or absence of the Y chromosome. This means that, if there is insufficient foetal DNA within the sample, a baby may be determined to be female when, in reality, there is simply too little male DNA to be detected by the test. Alternatively, there might be male DNA contamination, which could mean that the baby is incorrectly determined to be male.

NGS testing allows us to analyse the results in greater detail. It ensures that there is enough DNA from the baby, and that the DNA is genuinely from the baby (and not contamination), meaning that we have greater assurance in the result provided.

Blood sample collection

The mother just needs to provide a blood sample. This is usually drawn from the arm.

The blood sample is time sensitive and needs to be collected by a nurse, a phlebotomist or another medical professional. The samples should then be sent back to our laboratory for testing, straight away.

How accurate is the Prenatal Gender test?

Our Baby Gender Test is the most advanced and accurate available, as it uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).

For the highest chance of a conclusive result, the mother should be at least 8 weeks’ pregnant when taking the test. This is to ensure there is enough fetal DNA in the mother’s bloodstream for the Y chromosome (if present) to be at a detectable level.

Our DNA laboratory is also accredited to the international quality standard ISO 17025.

What results are available with twins?

In twin pregnancies, the test will show whether at least one fetus is male or that all fetuses are female.

What does non-invasive mean, and is the test safe?

Our non-invasive gender test uses a simple blood sample from the mother and therefore does not require a needle to be inserted into the womb. With our non-invasive prenatal gender test, there is no risk to the baby or mother.

DNA tests from other testing labs may include invasive gender tests that require cells be obtained from either the amniotic fluid or the placenta using a needle.
