How early can you do a DNA test on an unborn baby?

How does this early DNA test work?

Not only can this prenatal paternity test be carried out at an early stage of the pregnancy, it is 100% safe for mom and baby. It only requires a cheek swab and blood sample from mom, and a cheek swab from the potential father(s). The test works by analyzing the baby’s DNA that is found in mom’s bloodstream. There is no risk to the mother or the unborn child, unlike an invasive prenatal test, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), in which embryonic fluid is taken directly from the womb using a needle.

The mother’s blood sample must be collected by a medical professional, such as a nurse, a phlebotomist, or another medical practitioner. Since blood samples break down quickly, they must be sent for testing as soon as possible after collection to avoid the risk of the blood samples hemolyzing.

The prenatal test procedure works by analyzing the collected DNA samples to determine an accurate match. Since DNA is inherited from both the mother and the father, a match will exist when the tested man is related to the baby. This can confirm without question the identity of the father.
