- Wash your hands before you collect your sample
- Remove any lipstick/lip gloss before collecting your sample
- Put your swab straight into the sample envelope after collecting your sample
- If collecting someone elseās sample, hold the swab stick as far away from the swab end as possible
- Send your samples back to the laboratory as soon as you have collected them
DONāT
- Eat or drink 30 minutes before collecting your sample ā residual food on the swabs can cause mould or bacteria to grow, which can interfere with the test

- Collect your sample from an area other than the inside of your cheek
- Put your swab on a surface before or after sample collection
- Put the swabs in plastic or sandwich bags before putting them into the sample envelope. The plastic stops the swabs from drying out, which can encourage microbial growth, and degrade the DNA

Frequently Asked Questions
Is collecting a DNA sample painful?
No. The cheek swab is simply rubbed inside the mouth ā itās quick, gentle and completely painless.
Can I collect my DNA sample at home?
Yes. Our kits are designed for easy, private use at home ā no need to visit a doctor or clinic.
Can children or babies provide a swab?
Yes. For young children, gently rub the swab inside the cheek. Itās safe and non-invasive.
For babies that are breastfed, please try to collect samples before a feed rather than after as the presence of breast milk on the sample will cause a mixture of the mother and babyās DNA to be observed and the sample will need to be recollected.
How long does it take?
The entire process takes just a few minutes per person.
Is consent needed for DNA testing?
Yes, consent is required from or on behalf of each person taking part in the test.
For an AlphaBiolabs DNA test:
- Adults must register their test online and provide their own consent (electronic signature) before their DNA samples can be used for testing
- For any minor(s) taking part in the test, a parent or legal guardian MUST register the test and provide consent on each minorās behalf. Details of the person providing consent must be given when registering the test using our online registration form.
By providing consent on behalf of a minor, you are making a legal declaration that you have the lawful right to sign on that minorās behalf for the test that has been ordered.
- Deceased individuals: when a DNA test is needed using DNA samples from a deceased person (e.g. to verify a biological relationship to a family member who has passed away), a person with legal authority or a āqualifying relationshipā to the deceased may provide consent on their behalf. Qualifying individuals often include a spouse, parent, or another close family member.
If AlphaBiolabs does not have each personās explicit consent ā including for any minor(s) taking part in the test ā we cannot perform the DNA test.
