What happens to my DNA samples after testing?

All DNA samples received at our laboratory are securely stored onsite. After testing, the samples are kept for 3 months and then destroyed by incineration.

Our DNA testing services can be bought on-line from our website from just $119 and mailed direct to your home. We offer a full range of relationship testing kits, including Paternity, Maternity, Sibling, Twin, Grandparent, Aunt and Uncle, Y Chromosome and Single Genetic Profile tests.

The testing kits include full instructions, making it very easy for you to collect your DNA samples. All you need to do is rub the mouth swabs provided on the inside of your cheek to collect cells. No blood is required for these DNA tests. It is a very simple and painless procedure. These collected cheek cells are then returned to our lab using the already-addressed envelope. Your results are then emailed back within 3–5 days from receiving the samples in the lab. It couldn’t be easier!

As soon as your samples are received in our laboratory, our in-house scientists create a DNA profile. They then examine specific markers present in repeat sections of the DNA. AlphaBiolabs is one of just a few labs accredited to test up to 42 DNA markers in standard tests; most relationship tests examine only 16. We also test all our exclusion results twice so you can be confident of getting accurate results.

Confidentiality is maintained at every step

Your results are emailed back to you as a pdf file that requires a password to open it. This password protects the report from being opened by anyone other than the person who instructed the test.

We only discuss any details of our DNA testing with those who are entitled to know (on receipt of correct passwords or answers to unique security questions). DNA relationship testing can be an emotional time and not everyone wants their close family to know that they are undertaking such tests. For this reason, we go to great lengths to minimize any chance of the company name being recognized in any correspondence. For example, online payment transactions do not name AlphaBiolabs as the recipient on bank statements.

In addition, all of our testing kits are sent out in discreet plain packaging with no company logos or branding.

We work hard to prevent your personal data from being disclosed or accessed in an unauthorized way by using a secure server that protects any financial transactions on our website. We also take appropriate physical, electronic and managerial measures to ensure that any data disclosed to us are kept secure. We limit access to your personal data to those employees, agents, contractors and other third parties who have a business need to know. They will only process your personal data on our instructions and they are subject to a duty of confidentiality. All identification documents, both hard copy and electronic files, are destroyed after 12–18 months.
