Twins born ‘decades apart’

A pair of twins were born ‘decades apart’ after they were delivered within 30 minutes of each other on New Year’s Eve. Joslyn was born at 11.37 pm on December 31, 2019, while her brother Jaxon came at 12.07am on January 1, 2020, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel, Indiana.

The siblings weren’t supposed to arrive until February 19, making them nearly 2 months premature.

Parents Dawn Gilliam and Jason Tello say they are shocked that their babies arrived just as the new year was heralded in.

“We’re still kind of overwhelmed. We’re kind of speechless still”, Mr. Tello told the Indianapolis Star.

Dawn was told in November that she might need to deliver as early as Thanksgiving due to a scare over her blood pressure. The concerned couple then made an unplanned trip to the hospital on New Year’s Eve because of a lack of fetal movement. Following a check-up, doctors made the decision to deliver the babies immediately.

Joslyn was the first of the twins to arrive, which was expected as she’d been in position for most of the pregnancy. She weighed 4 pounds and 11 ounces.

Jaxon was breech so it took longer for him to be delivered. He arrived 30 minutes later (in the next decade), weighing 4 pounds, 5 ounces. Both twins were on feeding tubes but are expected to return home in the near future.

“Earlier, we talked about it would be great to have them born on different dates”, Mr. Tello told reporters. “But here we are with this surprise – different dates, different years. That was definitely interesting for us for sure.”

DNA twin testing

DNA twin testing is an easy way to determine whether multiple children from the same birth are genetically identical or fraternal (non-identical). A testing kit is mailed to your home, which includes full instructions and swabs to collect the DNA samples. These swabs need to be rubbed on the inside of each twin’s cheek to collect buccal cells. When the swabs are returned to our laboratory for testing, our scientists extract the DNA from these cells. Identical twins will share the same DNA profile whereas non-identical twins will have different DNA profiles.

The twin testing certificate will be emailed back to you in 3–5 days stating whether your twins are identical or not and showing which DNA markers matched. This DNA test can also be used to test more siblings to establish whether higher multiples are identical or non-identical (such as triplets and quadruplets, etc).

An increasing and novel use of a twin test is to use the DNA profile to create a unique gift for new parents, their children, and friends and family. The DNA profile can also be made into exclusive artwork.

A DNA test for twins costs just $119 and can be ordered direct from our website. For more information, please contact AlphaBiolabs via Live Chat or call now at 727-325-2902.
