Who might need toothbrush or nail DNA testing?

The usual method of collecting a DNA sample for an at-home DNA test is to rub a cheek (buccal) swab – like a Q-Tip – on the inside of the donor’s cheek to collect buccal cells.

This process is very simple, quick, completely pain-free and non-invasive.

However, there are several scenarios where collecting a cheek swab sample may not be appropriate, and a toothbrush or nail DNA test might be the best option:

The person has passed away

Cheek swab samples cannot be collected from deceased individuals. As long as the person passed away recently, a used toothbrush or the person’s nail clippings may be the only viable sources of DNA.

If a usable DNA profile can be extracted from the toothbrush or nail clippings, a relationship test can then be performed in the usual way, comparing the DNA profile of the deceased person with that of a living relative (collected in the usual way with a cheek swab).

Discreet testing

DNA testing can be an extremely sensitive subject, especially when it comes to testing children.

For example, many parents would be understandably reluctant to discuss the idea of paternity testing with their child, especially if the child is older and collecting a cheek swab sample for testing could lead to difficult conversations.

In this scenario, a more discreet method of DNA sample collection using a used toothbrush or nail clippings might be preferred. This means the child would not need to be made aware that a test is being undertaken.

Individuals with developmental or sensory challenges

For some people with developmental or sensory challenges, submitting a used toothbrush or nail clippings may be preferable to collecting a DNA sample using a cheek swab.

Consent and DNA testing

Whatever your circumstances, and whichever sample type is being used for DNA testing, it’s important to remember that consent is still required from or on behalf of each person taking part in the test, before the test can be performed.

Important!

• We can accept regular, manual toothbrushes, or electric toothbrush heads. If sending an electric toothbrush, please just send the head – not the whole toothbrush.
• Please send a toothbrush that has been used regularly for at least one week. The more a toothbrush has been used, the more likely it is to provide a usable DNA profile.
• Put the dry toothbrush or toothbrush head into the sample envelope provided in your test kit – DO NOT put it in a plastic bag or any other packaging, as this will reduce the likelihood of obtaining a usable DNA profile.
• Your test kit will contain everything you need to collect cheek swab samples for your subsequent DNA relationship test. The relationship test can only be performed if a viable DNA profile can be retrieved from the toothbrush.
