Prenatal gender testing: How it works

For many expectant parents, discovering the sex of their baby is an exciting and significant milestone in their pregnancy journey.

Whether it’s to start preparing the nursery, picking out names, or simply to satisfy curiosity, knowing your baby’s sex can help you feel even more connected to your growing family.

Thanks to advances in DNA science, it’s now possible to find out as early as six weeks into pregnancy, with a simple blood sample taken from mom.

At AlphaBiolabs, we provide fast, accurate, and discreet prenatal gender testing that gives you the answers you’re looking for, from the comfort of your own home.

With trusted scientific expertise, we’re proud to offer one of the most reliable early gender tests available to families across the country, direct from our accredited laboratory.

What is a Prenatal Gender Test?

AlphaBiolabs’ Prenatal Gender Test screens for the presence of the male Y chromosome in the mother’s blood from as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, with a proven accuracy of 99.9%.

The test is perfect for individuals or couples who are:

  • Eager to start preparing for their baby’s arrival
  • Curious about their baby’s gender before the routine ultrasound scan
  • Looking for a scientific, laboratory-based method for early gender prediction

How does the test work?

Every human being has a pair of sex chromosomes in each cell. The Y chromosome is present in males, who have one X and one Y chromosome, while females have two X chromosomes.

For a prenatal gender test, mom’s blood sample is analyzed by our in-house geneticists to determine if the Y chromosome is present.

  • If a Y chromosome is detected, the baby is a boy
  • If a Y chromosome is not detected, the baby is a girl

Once you receive your test kit, you’ll need to arrange your blood sample collection via our recommended mobile phlebotomy service. Your test kit will contain full details on how to book your sample collection appointment.

How soon can I take a prenatal gender test?

AlphaBiolabs’ prenatal gender test can be taken from as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, making it one of the earliest scientifically valid methods for determining a baby’s sex.

To ensure accurate results, mom must be at least 6 weeks pregnant on the day of the sample collection to ensure any Y chromosome present in the blood sample is at a detectable level

The test is not suitable for women who have had a bone marrow/stem cell transplant or solid organ transplant from a male donor at any time OR a blood transfusion in the 3 months prior to testing.
