Hollywood A-listers Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson might actually be half-brothers, according to news reports, following revelations by McConaughey in Kelly Ripa’s ‘Let’s Talk Off Camera’ podcast.
Whilst discussing their new Apple TV+ comedy called ‘Brother From Another Mother’, in which the pair play fictionalized versions of themselves, McConaughey revealed how life could be imitating art. He explained that following a family holiday in Greece it had come to light that his mother knew Harrelson’s father, possibly intimately, so he decided to start investigating his family background.
The acting pair have been close friends for years after starring together in shows EDtv and True Detective and have often been told how much they look alike, but the actors are still deciding whether to take a Sibling DNA test to prove their theory about a family connection between them.
McConaughey said, “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line. And that’s part of our bromance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”
Many US families also have questions about possible sibling connections and at AlphaBiolabs we are highly experienced at giving them the expert answers they need, through DNA testing at our accredited laboratory.
From just $249, our Sibling DNA test can help you confirm whether two or more people are full siblings or half siblings.
When two or more people have the same biological parents, they are classed as full siblings. Half siblings only share one biological parent – either the mother or father. Half siblings share approximately 25% of their DNA, inheriting DNA in common from their shared parent (mother or father).
Male half-siblings who have the same biological father will have the same Y chromosome. This is because all male children inherit their Y chromosome from their father.
For a Sibling DNA test, all we need is a simple, painless cheek swab sample from each possible sibling. For the most conclusive result, we also ask for the biological mother’s DNA sample, if it is available, but can still carry out the test effectively if it’s not.
Once these samples arrive at the laboratory, our scientists analyze and compare the DNA in them to determine the genetic profile and calculate a sibling DNA index or likelihood ratio.
- A likelihood of greater than 10 suggests that the tested individuals are either full or half siblings
- A likelihood of less than 0.1 is not supportive, meaning the individuals are unlikely to be related
- A likelihood which falls between 0.1 and 10 is considered inconclusive, which means a relationship cannot be determined based on the statistical probability obtained from the analysis
