Determining the zygosity of twins can establish whether or not they are identical or fraternal. Twins will be identical or fraternal depending on how the babies were formed in the womb.
- Identical twins are formed from a single fertilized egg, which went on to split into separate embryos. This means that the siblings’ DNA is exactly the same and they are known as monozygotic.
- Non-identical (or fraternal) twins are the result of separate fertilized eggs and are known as dizygotic, which means they have two zygotes. These babies are no more alike than any other brothers or sisters, and may be both male, both female, or one of each. They share DNA in common as in the case of brothers and sisters.
However, it’s not always clear in utero whether twins are identical. They don’t always share the same placenta and sac: it all depends on when the eggs splits.
The only way to know for sure whether twins are identical or fraternal is through DNA zygosity testing (also known as twin testing).
How does a test determine zygosity of twins?
The zygosity test involves analyzing tiny amounts of DNA from inside each twin’s mouth. A simple mouth swab (like a long Q-tip) is all that is needed to collect these samples. This is a very simple and painless procedure. When these samples are returned to AlphaBiolabs’ laboratory for testing, our DNA scientists examine specific markers present in repeat sections of DNA and compare these between the tested individuals. Identical twins will share the same DNA profile whereas non-identical siblings will have different DNA profiles.
The testing kit can be ordered from our website and delivered straight to your home. Full instructions are included and an already-addressed envelope to send your DNA samples back to us.
AlphaBiolabs’ Twin testing costs just $119 online with results and a keepsake certificate in 3–5 days. An increasing and novel use of a twin test is to use the DNA profile to create a unique gift for new parents, their children, and friends and family. The DNA profile can also be made into exclusive artwork.
